In honor of Ralph’s first trip to “the Big Apple,” we partnered with Celebrity Dog Trainer, Andrea Arden, for a one time enlightening group training class on May 15th, 2018 at the New York Dog Spa & Hotel.
The informative class was filled with key safety tips, real-life stories, Andrea’s authentic humor, and of course the antics of our fabulous pups. Watch the video to see the top 5 key pieces of advice from Andrea to live a happier and safer life with your dog.
Two Critical Behaviors that could Save Your Dog’s Life: Hand Targeting & Gotcha
During the class, Andrea discussed several interactions and techniques that we as Pet Parents can learn to develop a more cooperative relationship with our dogs. The goal of the class was to teach us ways to engage our dogs that are fun and beneficial in regards to manners and their safety.
There were two critical behaviors that Andrea demonstrated during the class, which in the event of an emergency could literally save your dog’s life.
This technique is very simple. It is the action of presenting the palm of your hand and the expectation is your dog will touch their nose to your hand. Start by teaching it by putting your hand no more than 6 inches away from your dog. Then you will mark the behavior when it happens. Marking a behavior means choosing a word that says to the dog, “Yes, that was the right thing”. At first dogs do not understand what the mark is, but with time they learn that when they hear that word it means something good happened. The hand targeting recall technique can be extremely useful if you are ever in a situation where your dog cannot hear you, the intent is you can show them the palm of your hand and they will return to you.
The idea of this technique is literally just showing your dog a treat first and then grabbing their collar super gently. By practicing this, you will gradually build up to a dog whose collar can be grabbed easily in the event that they ever get off leash.
